Who this laptop belongs to, and why that shapes the repair
people buy The A2992 14 inch Pro when the work is heavy. Video editors, 3D and motion designers, developers running builds, photographers colour grading on the road. The screen is not a nice extra on this machine. It's the reason it was chosen.
That's why we approach the A2992 differently from a MacBook Air. Every panel is tested for HDR peak, 120Hz switching and local dimming before it goes back. There's no local; and aftermarket option because a compromised panel on this laptop defeats the point of owning it. And we replace the panel inside your existing lid rather than swapping the whole assembly, because your camera, hinges and lid are fine and you shouldn't pay to replace them.
Identifying the A2992
Two 14 inch MacBook Pros came out together in late 2023. The A2992 with M3 Pro or M3 Max, and the A2918 with the plain M3. Same size, same panel specification, different model number, different price.

Why 1650
There are Three things.
The M3 generation panel is a newer part than the M1 Pro and M2 Pro panel, with SDR brightness raised to 600 nits. It costs more than the 1550 AED panel.
The A2992 panel is supplied by model number, separately from the A2918 panel, and it costs a little more. Same specification on paper. Different part number and different price to us.
Space Black. The panel's border and surround have to match the lid, so the Space Black panel is a distinct part from Silver. We stock both.
We'd rather show the reasoning than pretend the number appeared from nowhere.

The last testing we do on every A2992 panels
A working desktop tells you almost nothing about an XDR panel. Here's what we check before the laptop leaves.
We check the Local dimming zones. The mini-LED backlight is divided into zones that switch independently. We run a black field with small bright shapes moving across it and watch the backlight track them. Any zone that stays dark, stays lit, or flickers at low brightness fails the panel.
HDR peak. SDR use on this panel tops out at 600 nits. To confirm the panel reaches 1600, we play HDR content and measure it. A panel that won't enter HDR mode is not an acceptable replacement.
ProMotion. We watch the refresh rate switch from 24Hz on video to 120Hz on scrolling, and confirm the fixed rates are selectable in settings.
Colour uniformity. A white field at several brightness levels, checked for tint shifts and dark corners. On a machine used for grading, this one matters.
And a note on blooming. A faint glow around bright objects on a black background is normal for mini-LED. Your original screen did it. It's not a fault, and we say so on the warranty section below to save an argument later.
Original Apple panel only
There's no aftermarket option on the A2992 model.
The aftermarket XDR panels we've encountered don't match the dimming zone count, don't hit the same peak brightness, and have unreliable ProMotion. They also fail early more often than aftermarket panels for cheaper laptops. For someone who grades footage or checks colour on this screen, that's a working tool made unreliable.
If you're offered this repair far below 1650, ask the shop to show you HDR content at full brightness and 120Hz scrolling on the finished screen before you pay. That test takes two minutes and it tells you everything.

Apple replaces the entire display assembly on this model. Lid, hinges, cables, antenna, camera and panel as one unit. Some independents do the same because it's faster. You end up paying for a working camera and a working lid you didn't need.
We fit a new panel inside your existing lid. The 1080p camera stays in the notch. The hinges stay. It's slower and it takes more skill, and it's why the repair is 1650 rather than the price of a full assembly.
If the lid is bent from a drop and a panel won't sit flat, we tell you before starting, not after.
Original adhesive tape
At MacTech Pro we use only Pre-cut Apple adhesive strips for every work, it shaped to the housing, rated for heat, even pressure on all four edges. That's what holds the panel on an A2992 from the factory and it's what we use.
Liquid glue and generic tape are faster and nearly free. They're also what fails when the laptop spends an afternoon in a car in August. Lifting corner, dust under the edge, and on mini-LED, sometimes a bright or dark band along the side that's under uneven pressure.

True Tone and ProMotion after the repair
We check Both true tone and pro motion before leaving .
True Tone calibration lives on the panel. We transfer it during the repair so the toggle stays in System Settings and behaves as before. ProMotion works because the panel is an original Apple mini-LED part. We confirm both in testing rather than assume.
Damage we typically see on this model
Transport, mostly. This laptop goes on set, to client offices, through airports.
Pressure damage first: a charger, drive or lens case pressed against the lid in a bag. Nothing visible outside, but a dark bloom, coloured lines or a black region inside. On mini-LED it can look like a patch where the backlight works but the image doesn't.
Then the lid closed on something. Earbud, cable end, pen. The crack starts there.
Then corner drops, which crack the panel and sometimes bend the lid.
And occasionally a panel that fails without damage. A dimming zone stuck dark, a dim strip along one edge, flicker at low brightness. We work out whether it's the panel, the cable or the board before charging anything.
The repair, step by step
We complete all these process on Two to three hours. Most of it is adhesive setting and testing.
Morning drop-off, ready after lunch. Afternoon drop-off, ready before we close.
- Photos of the laptop from every side, with you present if you're in the shop.
- Fault confirmation. Panel, cable or logic board. Free.
- Lid opened, damaged panel removed, old adhesive cleaned off entirely.
- True Tone data transferred to the new panel.
- Original mini-LED panel fitted with original Apple adhesive strips and left to set under even pressure.
- Full test. Brightness sweep, HDR peak, ProMotion switching, local dimming, colour uniformity, True Tone, camera, lid sensor, hinge.
- After photos sent on WhatsApp alongside the before set.

Warranty
You get Three months warranty on the panel we fitted and the work we did. Dead pixels, lines, a failed dimming zone, flicker, backlight faults, the display lifting at an edge. Bring it back and we fix it.
Not covered: new damage, a fresh crack, a bent lid, liquid inside. Blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds is normal for mini-LED and isn't a fault. Send a photo if you're unsure and we'll tell you honestly.
On Apple's side: the A2992 is a late 2023 laptop, so most are past the one year warranty now. That warranty never covered accidental damage anyway. AppleCare+ does, so if you have it, go to Apple first. Without it, Apple quotes a full assembly replacement. Their price changes, so compare it against 1650 before deciding.

Original Apple mini-LED panel, and will they show you the part? Will they show HDR and 120Hz working before you pay? Panel only or whole assembly? Adhesive strips or glue? True Tone confirmed in writing? Is the quote the full price? Can you watch, or get photos?
